The information obtained from physical fitness testing, in combination with the individual’s health and medical information, can be used by athletes to help achieve specific fitness goals.

The type of testing done includes:

  • Body composition assessment: refers to the relative percentage of body weight that is fat and fat-free tissue.

  • Body mass index: is used to assess weight relative to height and is calculated by dividing body weight in kilograms by height in meters squared.

  • Tests for cardio-respiratory fitness: related to the ability to perform large muscle, dynamic, moderate-to-high intensity exercise for prolonged periods. Performance here is determined by the athlete’s state of respiratory, cardiovascular and skeletal muscle systems.
